Rimshot and crosstick are confused: what does MIDI receive?

Plug your kit in

Don’t guess, measure. The kit check is open to everyone and needs no account.

Check my kit

You play a crosstick but hear a rimshot, or the other way around. Before adjusting anything, find out whether the module sends the wrong note or only the software mapping is mixed up.

The eDrumWork diagnostic asks for each articulation separately and compares the notes received with the snare map.

One physical area, several intentions

Many pads tell head, rim, rimshot and crosstick apart from several signals or from their relative strength. A real rimshot can legitimately trigger head and rim together.

So the diagnostic has to recognize allowed compound responses instead of calling every second event a double trigger.

Separate the gestures

  1. Play several clear crossticks with the stick resting on the head.
  2. Play several clear rimshots, striking head and rim together.
  3. Keep strokes separated and reasonably consistent.
  4. Compare the main note and any allowed companion note.
  5. Retest both articulations after every change.

If the module sends the expected notes but the plugin plays the wrong voice, correct the software map. If the requested articulation is replaced by the other one in raw MIDI, D08 is established.

On some modules, the dividing line depends on how hard the rim is hit. An unnaturally hard crosstick can legitimately come out as the other articulation, so the protocol should use realistic musical strokes.

Moving that line may bring back the rimshot but make the crosstick harder to get, or the other way around. Options vary by module and pad type; do not carry a TD-12, TD-17, DTX or Strike value over to another device.
