How can you tell whether your drum timing is improving?

Check my kit, try the coach

A summary looks better than the last one, but you played slower or changed your setup. Before drawing conclusions, check what the results are actually comparing. No single number sums up your playing or your progress.

Read average placement and consistency together

Average placement shows a tendency to play early or late. Spread shows how much the deviations vary. Early and late strikes can cancel out in the average while the playing stays uneven. Conversely, fairly consistent playing can be shifted as a block.

The share of notes inside the timing window adds another angle, and it counts expected notes that never arrived.

Progress: compared conditions, indicators and the next thing to practice.

Compare like with like

In Progress, you can review a groove and its series, one per set of conditions. Notation, tempo, swing, judging rules and what is known about the kit all matter when you read them. A change in conditions is not automatically progress or a step back.

Check your device latency too. A constant offset can come from your playing or from the setup, and the number alone cannot tell which. A missing strike may also call for a kit check.

Turn the summary into what you practice next

A targeted tip can name an instrument and a position in the bar to rework. Find that passage, practice it at a comfortable tempo, then go back to the full groove. The learning methods help you prepare for that.

Analyzed time covers completed, reconciled bars, not the whole time the page was open. A small difference between two attempts, even plotted on a chart, does not prove lasting improvement.

Leave room for your ears

Dynamics and articulations can only be read when the score and your setup make them measurable. MIDI does not capture your whole sound or how the playing feels. Use the results to pick one specific question to work on, not to give yourself an overall level.

Full practice and progress tracking are included in the subscription. See how the trial works and start with your own drums.
