Record a groove by playing it, then work on it

Your turn at the drums

Check your kit and audio setup, then try the coach for free. Full practice and tracking come with the subscription.

Check my kit, try the coach

An idea comes out of your sticks, but entering it cell by cell kills the flow. Open the Pattern builder in the Workshop: recording collects your MIDI strokes and places them on a grid. The result is an editable pattern you can listen to and practice.

Prepare the recording grid

First check that your kit profile recognizes the instruments. Choose the voices, tempo, beats per bar and recording subdivision. This grid decides where the strokes land in the transcription.

Start recording, wait for the count-in and play. The previous grid stays on screen during the take. When you stop, a take that fills at least one cell replaces the draft, so save any earlier work before you record again.

Demonstration with simulated MIDI. During recording, only the click is heard; the app generates drum sounds during playback. Captions available.

Review the take before saving

The video shows the recording, the report and playback. Strokes are snapped to cells, so an unsuitable subdivision can move notes or merge ones you meant to keep separate. Read the report to see which strokes were kept and what could not be written.

Listen to the pattern, check its rests and instruments, then edit the grid as needed. MIDI cannot tell which hand hit a pad, so sticking is a separate step: a suggested sticking is not a movement anyone observed.

Recording uses a straight grid. To give it a different feel afterward, read about straight eighth notes and swing. Playback uses the app's own sounds; the MIDI take keeps no audio recording of your module.

Keep the idea short enough to check

Start with a simple groove. Once you have reviewed it, save it in your space and learn the difficult passage before playing the whole groove with the coach.

Creating and saving a pattern requires an account and full practice access. The kit diagnostic is still free if you want to check MIDI reception first.
