What should you practice with twenty minutes at the drums?

Check my kit, try the coach

By the time you are set up at the kit, you are torn between a familiar groove, something new and a coordination exercise. The session can end without you sticking with any one thing. Starting with a clear intention makes it easier to pick up the thread next time.

Choose one task, not a long list

My guided path brings together what to work on and the work you can resume. Your starting point, your interests and the availability you entered shape how it is organized. You can open a planned session, resume something you were learning or choose a groove from the catalog.

The time you enter is a session budget that includes instructions, transitions and a recap. It is neither proof of minutes actually played nor a promise of results within that time.

My guided path: practice choices, available time and upcoming sessions.

Build the session around one passage

A fictional example: you have twenty minutes and one coordination gives you trouble. Find the passage, work out its gestures step by step, then switch to Listen, then play mode before going back to the full groove. How you split the time depends on the work; no split suits everyone.

The guide to learning a groove in passages explains those steps. If you already know the pattern, you can play it straight away with the coach. You do not need a program to keep a groove’s results.

Leave yourself a next step you want to come back to

At the end, look over what was observed and note how the work felt. Fatigue, wanting variety and wanting to stay with the passage mean different things. Marking a task as attempted does not mean you have mastered it.

A program combines several goals; the schedule gives them dates and lets you adjust a single session. These tools support your choices instead of imposing the same organization on every session.
