Check my kit, try the coach

You want discreet ghost notes and accents that stand out. Before chasing a better summary, check that your kit actually transmits those contrasts. A MIDI velocity value describes the module’s response; it is not a universal measure of how hard your hand hits.

Tell a missing note from weak contrast

Play slowly on the same snare zone. Does the ghost note show up in MIDI? Does it stand apart from ordinary strokes? If it disappears, start with the missing ghost notes guide and the kit diagnosis. Hitting harder just to make the warning go away would wreck the musical intention.

The diagnosis checks the response; dynamics work then builds on what the kit can really tell apart.

Calibrate the zones you play

In the kit profile, follow the strength calibration instructions: play a series as hard as your normal playing will ever need. The reference belongs to the measured zone. Do not copy it from snare to hi-hat or from one module to another.

Kit diagnosis: selected snare and measured strength reference.
Illustration: reference calculated from fictional MIDI strikes; diagnosis still partial.

Repeat the calibration after changing hardware or the module’s response. Getting the same MIDI value on every pad is not the goal.

Read the dynamics the score asks for

On drumheads, the judging separates ghost notes from ordinary strokes. An ordinary stroke is not penalized for being too loud, and a rimshot is judged as an articulation. On hi-hat and ride, the distinction is between ordinary notes and accents. Crash dynamics are not judged.

Choose a groove whose score calls for these contrasts. Prepare a passage slowly, then play it with the coach. Step-by-step learning helps you coordinate the gestures but does not judge their strength: dynamics are checked when you play the full groove.

Check the summary against your ears

A zone without a strength reference cannot be measured, and the absence of a reported fault does not mean the dynamics were right. Compare results at the same tempo, notation and setup, then listen to whether the contrast serves the phrase. MIDI does not sum up your sound.

The kit diagnosis and strength references are free. Full practice with the coach, and its tracking, are included in the subscription; Practice explains how the trial works.
